Preliminary phytochemical analysis and in vitro antioxidant activity of Glochidion ellipticum Wight (Phyllanthaceae)

Introduction and Aim: Reactive oxygen species are implicated in the pathophysiology of several human ailments. Antioxidants from plants shown to be promising terms their health benefits. Glochidion ellipticum Wight is belonging family Phyllanthaceae. This study investigated antioxidant potential solvent extracts G. leaves vitro. Materials Methods: Sequential extraction shade dried leaf powder was carried out by maceration using petroleum ether, chloroform methanol solvents. The were subjected preliminary phytochemical analysis. DPPH, ABTS Ferric reducing assays performed investigate vitro activity extracts. Total phenolic flavonoid content estimated Folin-Ciocalteau reagent Aluminium chloride colorimetric estimation method, respectively. Results: Preliminary analysis revealed presence phytoconstituents viz. flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids tannins material. scavenged both DPPH radicals a concentration-dependent manner with marked least being extract ether extract, In ferric assay also, showed followed highest extract. Conclusion: radical scavenging abilities observed this could attributed secondary metabolites detected plant as it well established that polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids excellent antioxidants. A direct correlation between phenolics appears suitable for developing novel formulations can used manage oxidative damage.
